With all the crocodile tears some conservative lawmakers have been crying about “divisive rhetoric” in the wake of the tragic shooting of a Congressman and others at a baseball practice, you might get the impression they are paragons of rhetorical virtue. As someone who trudges through the FeverSwamps™ daily, I can tell you that is not true.
Jake Viano, chair of the Colorado GOP, has been eating up all the attention he’s gotten based on the harassment by an anarchist of Republicans in the Denver Pride parade. Viano was all over Facebook lamenting incendiary rhetoric:
You might remember Kelly Couey from this post about his wife traveling to Washington to take part in a photo-op with Donald Trump, or his part in a failed anti-Bennett commercial promoted by local GOP activist Laura Carno.
I had to do a double-take when I saw this. Joshua Hosler “hearting” a headline that reads: “President Trump basically insulted all our allies to their faces.”
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that conservatives in the Colorado State Senate appear to cheer the violence against a reporter by a Republican Congressional candidate in Montana. They used to be much more careful about appearing to endorse political violence. What has changed that they would now do something so careless? Perhaps it’s the election of a president who seems to encourage violence and who constantly attacks the free press and reporters.
As you may know, the right has been making outrageous, unsubstantiated claims about the murder of Seth Rich, a Democratic operative who was killed. Sean Hannity has been pushing the story along with right-wing fake news outlets. This is, of course, nothing new for the hard-right, who have been clinging to long-debunked stories of the Clintons having people murdered for 30 years. Here are a couple of examples:
Colorado State Sen. Tim Neville (R-Littleton) has never been shy to broadcast his supposed “pro-life” position. When you look under the hood, however, it seems that he must not care about reducing the abortion rate. How else could you explain his support for policies that would increase abortion rates and make it harder for women to receive life-saving medical care? Today’s example is his support for the so-called “Mexico City Policy” first implemented by Ronald Reagan:
Mucking through the Fever Swamps™ like I do on a daily basis can be disheartening to say the least. The speed at which conservatives went from #NeverTrump and claims of anti-statism to being Trump apologists was amazing to behold.
I suppose it was inevitable. As each day brings new horrors committed by Trump, more and more Republicans begin to get nervous about owning his failures, and they try to cast the blame for his election on the real perpetrators—Democrats!
I’m not sure what possessed the Otero county Republican party to install 19-year-old Devin Camacho as their chair, but he is pretty extreme in his views.
