Every second Saturday of the month at its headquarters on 17th Avenue, the Independence Institute hosts a “Barter Market,” ostensibly for freedom-loving citizens to exchange goods and avoid sales tax. Items listed as either on offer or requested at the monthly gathering include organic local food items, homemade candles and guitar lessons, but also more conspiracy-minded products like “EMF protection clothing,” chlorine dioxide (a dangerous solution billed as a cure-all, including for COVID), and accounting services to “opt out of the IRS.”
The Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN) is the latest addition to a group of conservative, anti-LGBTQ, pro-charter school activist groups in Colorado that include the Independence Institute, FAIR [Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism], and FEC United.
Conspiracist clerk Tina Peters, who faces multiple felony charges for election-fraud-related crimes, answered questions at a pair of screenings of the faux-documentary “Selection Code” last week in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. The conspiracy movie, which stars Peters herself, makes debunked claims that not only the 2020 presidential election but also the 2021 Grand Junction municipal election were stolen from the rightful conservative winners.
Against a backdrop of pandemic and economic crises and with the government stepping in to pay for medical and direct relief to individuals and businesses, the right-leaning Independence Institute is moving ahead with its annual Alcohol, Tabacco, and Firearms fundraiser where, as the invitation states, attendees will “joyfully thumb our nose at the nanny-state.”
