As part of our weekly roundup of articles on political extremism in Colorado, the Colorado Times Recorder is featuring Sharon Sullivan’s coverage of a campaign event in western Colorado where state Rep. Marc Catlin (and others running for elected office) refused to say whether Trump lost the 2020 Election and pushed election conspiracy theories, Jason Salzman and Erik Maulbetsch’s article on Colorado congressional candidate Gabe Evans continuing to pay Jessica Spindle (his former political director who was fired for a string of antisemitic and threatening posts), and James O’Rourke’s piece on former Lakewood City Councilwoman Ramey Johnson going after her rival in a statehouse race for using the same position as a ‘political stepping-stone’ and Johnson’s history of pushing climate change denialism and connection to QAnon conspiracists. Also highlighted below is a story by the Pueblo Chieftain’s James Bartolo about Colorado for Life’s attempt to get a proposed abortion ban reintroduced in the Pueblo City Council.

Congressional Candidate Evans Continued to Pay Staffer After She was Fired for Bigoted Posts

State Rep. Gabe Evans (R-Fort Lupton), who is running against Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo (D-Thornton), continued to pay his former political director, Jessica Spindle, even after she was fired for posting a series of antisemitic, conspiratorial, and in some cases, threatening social media posts.

Former Lakewood Councilwoman Running for State Rep Attacks Lakewood Councilwoman for Using Position to Run for State Rep

Former Lakewood City Councilor Ramey Johnson has begun sending mailers arguing that sitting Lakewood Councilor Rebekah Stewart is using her position to run for a statehouse position. Johnson is running for the same statehouse seat and has previously run for Lakewood mayorship twice while she was sitting on Lakewood’s City Council. Johnson has been a fixture in Lakewood politics for decades and recently has pushed climate change denialism and begun associating with QAnon conspiracists.

Pueblo Chieftain: Colorado anti-abortion group urges Pueblo councilors to reintroduce abortion ban

Following a failed anti-abortion ordinance introduced by Pueblo City Councilor Regina Maestri, Colorado for Life has started sending out emails targeting two other councilors, Roger Gomez and Joe Latino, for not voting for the ordinance. The organization urged recipients to “flood” the email inboxes of the two councilmen to demand that they “stand by their pro-life values to reintroduce and pass this ordinance.”
