One Colorado, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, will be rallying supporters on Sunday in a kickoff event for their “Get Out the Vote” efforts.
“Voting is an act of love, for ourselves, our neighbors, and future generations,” said One Colorado Director Nadine Bridges in a news release. “When we vote, we’re not just choosing leaders; we’re choosing the kind of community we want to be. Let’s vote with joy, knowing that our commitment to our community will make a difference!”
The event will take place at Cerebral Brewing – Aurora Arts off of East Colfax and “is designed to energize and empower” the local community in the lead-up to the 2024 general election. It is open to longtime advocates and those just getting involved and includes many of One Colorado’s Get Out the Vote initiatives, including door-to-door canvassing, phone and text banking, and in-person volunteer opportunities.
One Colorado identified Amendment 43, a 2006 constitutional provision that banned marriage between same-sex persons, as a key issue for LGBTQ+ Coloradans. While same-sex marriage is federally recognized, the 2006 amendment makes Colorado one of 30 states to have a constitutional ban on gay marriage. Amendment 43 defines marriage between one man and one woman, creating a de facto ban on same-sex marriage if the United States Supreme Court were to overturn Obergefell V. Hodges. Overturning same-sex marriage has long been a goal for conservative legal activists, including Associate Justice Clarence Thomas who has explicitly stated his desire to see the Obergefell decision overturned.
One Colorado worked with state Reps. Alex Valdez (D-Denver) and Brianna Titone (D-Arvada), as well as state Sen. Joann Ginal (D-Fort Collins) to pass SCR24-003 which will now be on Colorado’s 2024 ballot as an initiative to overturn Amendment 43.
The event will be held on Sept. 8, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 9990 E Colfax Ave, Aurora.
