Those leafing through last Monday’s edition of the Aspen Times might have noticed this cartoon depicting a sombrero-wearing undocumented immigrant receiving better care in a hospital than a U.S. citizen.
The shocking anti-immigrant cartoon pushes the conservative narrative that undocumented people are using up resources to the detriment of native-born Americans, a narrative which isn’t factually supported.
With a doctor who’s depicted as a donkey, the cartoonist, Gary McCoy, is attempting to show Democrats giving preferential treatment to immigrants.
The Aspen Times published the cartoon amid growing public outrage and concern around the mistreatment of immigrants and refugees in U.S. detention centers, including allegations of widespread sexual abuse, lack of access to adequate nutrition, a lack of sanitation, overcrowding, and more.
