This week, conservative talk radio shows have focused many show segments on examining the Central American immigrant group currently travelling north through Mexico to seek opportunity in the United States.
On KNUS (710 am) multiple shows have featured contributors from the Center of Immigration Studies (CIR) to share their expertise and opinions. But the invited guest on at least one KNUS shows seems to have frustrated and depressed their hosts, partially by illuminating some mistruths in the debate, and partially due to being short on solutions.
On Monday’s Chuck & Julie Show, Chuck Bonniwell & Julie Hayden invited the research director from CIR Steven Camarota on their show and their exchange didn’t demonstrate much agreement on solutions, nor cause for an optimistic outlook.
Bonniwell’s responses to his guest reveal his frustration:
“So what I hear you saying […] is that it’s hopeless. We cannot control our border. We might as well just give up, and just merge into Central America! Because there is no solution.”
Julie Hayden ended the discussion with this summation:
“We’re screwed.”
Bonniwell concluded with:
“They are the people that are for limiting immigration. I mean, they’re on our side! Can you imagine what the other side says?”
CIR describes itself as “an independent, non-partisan, non-profit research organization […] devoted exclusively to research and policy analysis of the economic, social, demographic, fiscal, and other impacts of immigration on the United States.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center has identified the CIR as an anti-immigrant hate group.
