Democrats in El Paso County are once again hoping to flip a seat on the Board of County Commissioners, which has been solidly Republican since the Nixon administration. Former Colorado Springs City Councilor Yolanda Avila is running against incumbent Commissioner Lauren Nelson, who previously served on the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education.
Races for Colorado Senate, where Democrats currently have a narrow, five-seat majority, are ones to watch this year. Colorado Springs’s newly created Senate District 11 will see established politicians Rep. Tony Exum (D-CO Springs) and Colorado Springs District 4 City Councilor Yolanda Avila in a primary contest to compete against Sen. Dennis Hisey (R-Fountain).
