Salida Community Rallies in Support of Library, LGBTQ People
Approximately 300 people gathered in front of the Salida Regional Library yesterday as part of protest against a planned “Rosary Rally” organized by members of St. Joseph Catholic Church to oppose LGBTQ books in the library. Rosary Rallies have been associated with the Catholic activist group America Needs Fatima, named after the series of apparitions and miracles that occurred in Portugal in 1917. America Needs Fatima’s website identified April 19 as a day of Rosary Rallies to “stand against porn and LGBT books in schools and libraries.”
Lawsuit Challenges Colorado’s New Abortion Law
Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) signed the “Safe Access to Protected Health Care” package of legislation into law Friday, and within hours a legal challenge was filed by The Becket Fund, a Washington, D.C.-based, non-profit law firm, on behalf of Bella Health and Wellness (Bella), a Catholic healthcare provider, against SB23-190, which targets the marketing practices of anti-abortion centers and their use of an unproven pill to reverse an abortion.
Arvada City Council Candidate and Other Libertarians Address ‘Free Assange’ Rally
Members of the Libertarian Party of Colorado spoke during a Free Julian Assange Rally at the Capitol yesterday. The Denver rally was part of a nationwide series of events to bring attention to the plight of Wikileaks founder Assange, who in 2010 published a series of leaked documents provided by U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning showing, among many other things, evidence of U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Assange is currently appealing a U.S. extradition order in the U.K.
Judges Rule on Mifepristone Cases; Colorado Advocates Respond
Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump-appointed federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, has issued a ruling to stay the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, a drug used in medication abortions. Medication abortions consist of two medications, mifepristone, which blocks the body’s production of progesterone, stopping the pregnancy from progressing, and misoprostol, which causes the uterus to expel the aborted material.
‘I’m a Pissed Off Grandma’ — Republican Legislators Address Parent Rights Rally
Republican legislators addressed attendees of the Colorado Parent Advocacy Network’s (CPAN) “Rally for Parent Rights” yesterday. The rally, which featured approximately 100 attendees, was in response to House Bill 23-1003, which would create a sixth through twelfth grade mental health assessment screening program administered by the state Department of Public Health & Environment. Republican legislators addressed vaccines, charter schools, LGBTQ issues, and what they saw as government overreach in regard to policies aimed at Colorado students.
