This weekend, approximately 30 school board members, activists, and engaged citizens attended the Leadership Institute’s School Board and Education Policy Summit at the Colorado Springs Marriott. Founded in 1979 by Morton C. Blackwell, the conservative activist who was the youngest delegate for Barry Goldwater in 1964 and served as special assistant to Ronald Reagan, the Leadership Institute is an “explicitly conservative” 501(c)3 nonprofit that conducts a variety of political trainings across the country.

The El Paso County Democratic Party has voted to remove Alvin Sexton, a Widefield District 3 Board of Education candidate, from his position as a precinct organizer by a “supermajority vote,” according to a statement released this morning. Lawsuit Alleges D20 Board Candidate Defrauded Military Health Insurance
“I have run a business where we had to work within the lines,” said conservative Academy School District 20 Board of Education candidate Amy Shandy during an Oct. 4 candidate forum. “We didn’t get to ask the taxpayer for more money. We had to figure it out. Every single budget has room to be better, and we can do that.”
The Welcome Wagon: Searching for the Political Missing Middle
In recent weeks, voters in El Paso County have received text messages from a group called the “Welcome Party,” which is looking for “moderate problem-solvers in Colorado Springs to run for local office.”
No on 2A: Activists Oppose Colorado Springs Police Training Facility
Opponents of Colorado Springs Ballot Measure 2A gathered at City Hall Monday night for a rally against the measure before the evening’s City Council meeting. The measure would allow the city to retain $4.75 million in municipal tax revenue, which otherwise would have to be refunded to residents per TABOR, “for the purpose of acquiring property, planning, constructing, and equipping a training facility for the Colorado Springs Police Department.” Opponents of the measure, organized by the Chinook Center, a community hub in Southeast Colorado Springs, are concerned about the lack of community oversight and transparency for CSPD.
Title Board Rejects Economic Arguments from Anti-Abortion Advocates
Yesterday the Colorado Title Board rejected a motion for rehearing from the proponents of the “Protections for a Living Child” ballot initiative, which would classify abortion as murder and result in the prosecution of patients and medical providers and the closure of any medical facility that aids in an abortion, including pharmacies that provide medication abortion. Proponents Angela Eicher and Faye Barnhart argued that the fiscal note accompanying the initiative “appears prejudicial and could be misleading to the voter.”
Dark Money and the School Board Industrial Complex
Colorado Springs churches aren’t the only ones getting involved in the Academy School District 20 Board of Education race. According to independent expenditure reports, the Springs Opportunity Fund spent $48,214 for a direct mail campaign supporting conservative candidates Derrick Wilburn and Amy Shandy.
Seducing the Bride of Christ
During the 1980s, Colorado Springs was jokingly called the “evangelical Vatican” due to the prevalence of Christian megachurches, parachurches, ministries, and nonprofits. The influence of evangelical Christianity in Colorado Springs peaked in the 90s with the passage of Amendment 2, which banned local municipalities from enacting nondiscrimination ordinances to protect LGBTQ people. While the overt influence of groups like Focus on the Family on local and state politics has waned, the congregations in Academy School District 20 represent a sizable voting block. Messages from the Advocates for D20 Kids Discord server show that conservative candidates Derrick Wilburn and Amy Shandy were actively courting local churches for support in their campaigns.
