Joel Estes, namesake of Estes Park, brought five slaves into Colorado, Chloé Duplessis pointed out at a recent meeting of the Black Coloradan Racial Equity Study Commission. As Elaine Tassy reports for CPR, based on a handout from Duplessis, Estes took the slaves “back to Missouri and put them on his farm, gave them some livestock and provisions to last for a year and freed them a year before Abraham Lincoln’s Proclamation.”
This year marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Ku Klux Klan’s sweep of political power in Colorado. In 1924, voters elected numerous Klan supporters, including Governor Clarence Morley and U.S. Senator Rice Means. Senator Lawrence Phipps won reelection with Klan help. “The Klan also won a majority of positions in the state House of Representatives and the state Senate as well as multiple other positions all the way down to various school boards,” Northern Colorado History reminds us. Denver’s Klan-friendly mayor, Benjamin Stapleton, won his seat the year before.

When I met Erin Lee and her husband in September 2022 at an event sponsored by the Independence Institute (which publishes a column of mine through Complete Colorado), the Lees generally were accepting of LGBTQ people. Every decent American is shocked, outraged, and saddened by the July 13 attempted assassination of Donald Trump and the resulting murder of a bystander and wounding of two others. The perpetrator came within maybe an inch of murdering the former president.

Those who have nothing productive to add to the political discourse often turn to hateful fearmongering and scapegoating against members of minority or unpopular groups.
Colorado elected officials rejecting the science of biological evolution by this point has become an embarrassment to the state.
