The Colorado Times Recorder will host an online panel and fundraiser on Tuesday, May 12, to discuss its recent investigation (and new website) that reveals how wealthy conservative donors, such as GOP billionaire Phil Anschutz, have poured millions of dollars into a network of dark-money groups focused on public relations and ballot measures.
At the center of the network is Advance Colorado, a conservative organization that commands an entire political ecosystem — advocacy organizations, think tanks, PACs, and media outlets. With Advance Colorado leading the charge, these groups advocate on multiple fronts to advance the core interests of their wealthy conservative donors: cutting taxes for the rich, promoting fossil fuels over renewable energy, and expanding criminal prosecutions and ICE power.
In recent years, the conservative donors behind Advance Colorado have shifted their giving away from the Colorado Republican Party, which has become increasingly ineffective in the state, to Advance Colorado. This year alone, the organization has put 21 ballot initiatives in motion for November’s election.
At the May 12 panel, the Colorado Times Recorder’s Deputy Editor Erik Maulbetsch and investigative columnist Logan Davis will explain how Advance Colorado’s network operates — and why it’s had surprising success in blue Colorado.
The Zoom webinar is free, but Colorado Times Recorder Editor Jason Salzman will ask attendees to donate to the nonprofit news site, which relies on contributions. No donation is required, however.
