In Truth Social post early this morning President Trump reversed course on Congressman Jeff Hurd (CO-03), restoring the endorsement he pulled less than a month ago. Trump writes that he met with GOP primary challenger Hope Scheppelman, whom he had endorsed over Hurd on Feb. 21, and that she and perhaps also her husband have accepted Trump’s offer to work for his administration.
Trump’s re-endorsement post describes a conversation with Scheppelman that implies her continued to challenge to Hurd, which she was conducting with Trump’s endorsement, might have been impeding his chance for re-election.
Trump previously endorsed Scheppelman after becoming angry with Hurd opposition to his tariffs. In his endorsement of Scheppelman he attacked Hurd as a RINO who is “more interested in protecting Foreign Countries that have been ripping us off for decades than he is the United States of America.”
Neither Scheppelman nor Hurd immediately responded to email requests for comment. This article will be updated with any response received.
Scheppelman previously served as Colorado GOP Vice Chair under Dave Williams, who also now works for the administration. During her tenure as a state party official she called on the administration to freeze federal funding for her local Durango School District, as punishment for permitting the display of Pride and Black Lives Matter flags in classrooms.
