A congressional district north of Denver is expected to be a battleground for a race that will help determine which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives after this year’s midterm elections. It’s represented by Republican Gabe Evans, who defeated Democrat Yadira Caraveo in 2024 by fewer than 2,500 votes. He was sworn into office in January, and the Colorado Times Recorder has been covering the congressman and developments in his district ever since. Here is a sample of our reporting.
‘All Hat No Cattle’? Congressman Raises a ‘Few Cows’ As a Hobby, And Says It’s Legitimate To Promote Himself in Politics As a ‘Rancher’
Evans raises just a few cattle and thinks of his longhorn-related activities as a hobby. Yet, with an apparent eye on voters in his agricultural district, Evans issues a steady stream of political communications — beyond what’s on his website — about his agricultural activities, leading one Colorado rancher who served in Congress to describe Evans as “all hat, no cattle.”
Evans Says Energy Tariffs Bring Jobs to Colorado, While Dems Point Out Costs for Consumers

“Reciprocal tariffs ensure free and fair trade for American producers, including energy producers,” Evans said. “For instance, talk of tariffs has opened conversation with European leaders to replace dirty Russian natural gas with cleaner American natural gas, which would reduce annual carbon emissions by thousands of tons annually. Restoring balance in international trade brings more jobs to Colorado, protects the environment by increasing responsible production in the United States (vs dirty coal and slave labor in places like China or Russia), and lowers costs for Americans.”
Rotten American Dream Story? Evans Says His American Mom ‘Thought’ She’d Spend Her Life in a Hut in Mexico
Colorado Congressman Gabe Evans’ mom was born in the United States. Yet, throughout his election campaign and after he entered Congress, Evans repeatedly stated that his mother believed she’d spend her entire life in a “hut” with a “dirt floor” in Mexico. What’s up?
Evans Blames CO Democrats for Fueling the Demonization of Law Enforcement
Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO) came to a House committee hearing on “anti-law enforcement rhetoric” with heat, saying Colorado policies passed by Democrats added fuel to the fire in the demonization of law enforcement and blaming political rhetoric for leading to the murder of a former police officer.
Evans Downplays Concerns That Law-Abiding Immigrants Will Be Hurt in Trump’s Deportation Push
Asked about “collateral damage [that could] potentially hurt some people in your community that get caught up in this,” Evans replied, “You know, I think that’s why we have the justice system that we have in the United States. You know, we used to say, ‘As cops, you know, whatever we do stands for a night. But in the morning, when the lawyers and the judges all come back to work and review everything that we do, we’re the bottom of the totem pole.’ And anything that I do as a police officer can be overruled by the judges. The lawyers can petition that whatever I did be overruled. And so everything that law enforcement does is subject to very, very strict scrutiny from a wide variety of different perspectives to include perspectives that are oftentimes outside of the, you know, the official government.”

Last year, Republican Adam DeRito supported U.S. Representative Gabe Evans (R-CO) “full force.” Now he wants to unseat him.
Evans Takes ‘100%’ Credit for Passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill
