As the parent of a child with special needs, I am outraged by the Trump administration’s proposal to cut $12 billion from public education. I am very concerned that Congress will go along with these cuts. Among the most devastating cuts is the elimination of six special education grants, including preschool for children with disabilities and funding for accessible technology. These aren’t extras — they are lifelines that make it possible for kids like mine to succeed.

At the same time, the administration is funneling taxpayer dollars to private schools, which can and often do reject children with disabilities, and pouring money into charter schools. Many of these charters are closing due to low enrollment and scandals. Why cut critical services to prop up failing experiments?
Every child deserves a chance to learn. Congress must reject these cruel cuts and ensure that public funds stay in public schools, where they serve every child, regardless of ability. I am calling Rep. Lauren Boebert, Sen. Michael Bennet, and Sen. John Hickenlooper and telling them to support our students with disabilities and reject federal cuts to their public schools.
