The Colorado Times Recorder was honored to receive five awards Saturday in the annual four-state regional journalism contest sponsored by the Colorado Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

Columnist Logan Davis won first place in the “Investigative Reporting” category for “Fire on the Mountain: Inside a Secretive Colorado Bible College” (also Part II, Part III), first place in the “Columns/Op Ed Pieces” for “The Muckraker: Pete Hegseth & I Know the Same Christian Nationalists,” and second place in the “Religion Feature” category for “Bad Faith: the Narrowgate Cult;” Deputy Editor Erik Maulbetsch paced second in the “Politics News” category for “Conservative News Aggregation Site Goes Dark Following Times Recorder Inquiry;” and Freelance writer Robert Davis got third place in the “Politics News” category for “Republicans Back Down From ‘Political Theater’ of Non-Sanctuary City Resolutions.”

The Colorado Times Recorder, which is an openly progressive news site, was honored in the small newsroom division. Other divisions in the contest were for medium, large, and extra-large newsrooms.

The Durango Herald, which competed in the large newsroom division, got 47 awards. The Colorado Sun, which competed in the extra-large division, got 27 awards. If you combine all the Colorado news outlets owned by billionaire Phil Anschutz, then Anschutz-owned outlets got 52 awards: Colorado Politics (15), the Denver Gazette (15), and the Colorado Springs Gazette (22). Colorado Public Radio won 12 awards, and Denverite, its affiliated platform, won five. Colorado Newsline won nine awards.

This is the second year that the Colorado Times Recorder took home awards at the annual SPJ contest.
