On the West Steps of the Capitol today, leaders of ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, and state Rep. Lorena Garcia (D-Denver) unveiled the portrait ProgressNow members selected to replace the Trump portrait removed by Colorado Republicans at the request of Trump.

The winning replacement portrait depicts Trump’s head, pacifier in mouth, atop a baby’s body surrounded by toys, including Elon Musk performing the Nazi salute and crayons used to write “Executive Orders”

“Coloradans have spoken,” said Sara Loflin, the executive director of ProgressNow Colorado, as she pulled a red cloth from the new portrait.

“The new Trump portrait for the Colorado state Capitol.”

Via an online poll, ProgressNow members chose among four options (above) for the replacement portrait, including an image of Elon Musk.

In 2018, ProgressNow Colorado activists placed a painting of Putin in a space on the wall where the Trump portrait would eventually be hung. At the time, Colorado Republicans were having a tough time raising money to commission the Trump portrait.

But after the Putin prank made national headlines, Colorado Republican Senate President Kevin Grantham created a video citing the stunt and quickly raised $10,000 for the Trump portrait, which was subsequently painted by artist Sarah Boardman and unveiled in 2019.

Grantham told KHOW radio last week that he’s heard “some talk” that the White House or the Trump family may have a portrait they want to hang on the Capitol wall.

The Trump baby portrait wasn’t the only joke about the Trump painting today. Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) posted an image of himself of Facebook, which has over 8,000 likes. “No one likes an unflattering photo or painting of themselves, which is why I went in a different direction for my official portrait,” Polis wrote on Facebook.
