Matt Ball is the practical, progressive choice to represent Senate District 31. I randomly met Matt several years ago through our kids’ daycare. My son and his middle daughter became fast friends, and it wasn’t long before our families were getting together regularly. From our initial introduction, I was struck by Matt’s warmth, sincerity, and commitment to others. As I got to know him better, I learned about his impressive background as an Army veteran with multiple tours in Afghanistan, his dedication to public service, and his growing passion for health care advocacy, especially mental health.
Matt will be a champion for climate action and clean energy. Like many of you, I was surprised when State Senator Chris Hansen announced he would step down from representing our district. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Chris on environmental issues, particularly at the intersection of clean energy and good jobs. His leadership has been invaluable, and his departure leaves big shoes to fill.
That’s why Matt Ball is the right person to step up. As a climate advocate, I’m impressed by Matt’s practical approach to tackling the climate crisis. He understands the urgency of reducing emissions, expanding renewable energy, and preparing Colorado for a sustainable future. His vision for combining bold climate action with strong economic opportunities resonates deeply with the needs of our district. We deserve a State Senator who is not only committed to environmental stewardship, but who can also navigate the complexities of policy to deliver real results.
The voters of Senate District 31 will never have to question where Matt stands in his support for reproductive rights and access to abortion — fundamental rights supported by an overwhelming majority of Coloradans. As an 8 year board member of a leading Colorado reproductive rights organization, I know how critical this fight is.
In November, Colorado voters overwhelmingly approved Amendment 79, enshrining the right to abortion in our state constitution. This was a monumental step forward, but the work doesn’t stop there. We need leaders in the State Senate who will ensure this amendment is fully implemented, and that access to reproductive healthcare remains protected and equitable.
Matt will be a strong advocate for Colorado’s workers–like public school teachers. He grew up in Denver as the son of educators, and is a proud product of Colorado’s public schools. His upbringing instilled in him a deep respect for public education and an understanding of the vital role it plays in our communities. Matt is committed to fully funding our public schools, supporting teachers, and ensuring every child in Colorado has access to a high-quality education.
Beyond education, Matt’s dedication to workers’ rights is clear. As a former Colorado labor leader, I know what it takes to stand up for working families, and I trust Matt to be that voice in the State Senate. He’s ready to take on the issues impacting working Coloradans, including the rising cost of housing in Denver, strong unions, and policies that create a more equitable economy.
Matt and I share a mutual commitment to making a difference in the world. While I’ll never be an Army Ranger like Matt, my upbringing instilled in me a similar drive to serve others. Over the years, my professional life in the political arena has been centered on fighting for clean air and water, supporting labor unions and workers’ rights, and protecting reproductive freedom. I’ve seen firsthand the difference that principled, pragmatic leadership can make, and I believe Matt embodies those qualities.
I could go on and on about Matt Ball, but the truth is simple: he’s exactly the kind of leader we want and need in public office. I hope the members of the Senate District 31 vacancy committee recognize this great opportunity to elect a practical, solutions-oriented, and effective progressive leader, and join me in supporting Matt Ball.
