From Durango to Denver, Colorado Times Recorder reporters covered over a dozen state legislative races this year. We focused largely, but not exclusively, on the smaller set of competitive races where our reporting could help inform voters. The stories touch on policies ranging from Uber drivers to oil drilling, LGBT rights to … eating bugs. Seriously.
In Douglas County we broke news of Matt Burcham’s election fraud conspiracist beliefs as he tried to reclaim traditionally red Highlands Ranch from state Rep. Bob Marshall. Out on the Western Slope, our team covered state Rep. Marc Catlin dodging election denialism and a shockingly racist cartoon from statehouse hopeful Caleb Waller. Catlin won his race for a state Senate seat against Democrat Cole Buerger, while Waller failed to unseat Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Velasco in Glenwood Springs.
Our focus on legislative races occurred partly out of practicality — not a single statewide office appeared on Coloradans’ ballot this year and only one congressional seat was in real contention, but also because the more local the race the more impact it has on our readers’ daily lives. And while the majority control was never seriously at stake — Democrats were never in danger of losing control of either chamber — every district and every candidate had their own priorities, policies and yes, online posts, to cover.
Our reporting team includes Heidi Beedle, Logan M. Davis, Robert Davis, Brodie Farquhar, Suzie Glassman, James O’Rourke, Erik Maulbetsch, Jason Salzman, Ryan Simonovich, Sharon Sullivan, Owen Swallow, and David O. Williams.
Please enjoy our 2024 legislative coverage, compiled here for your wonky enjoyment.
