Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Logan Davis’ column, published by the Colorado Times Recorder on July 10 2024, titled “What if the Worst Happens?

Logan,

I appreciate the effort and heart you put into your essay regarding building communities. I agree with you regarding building coalitions, communities and getting into action via advocacy.

To that great good end, I ask that you reconsider your position regarding breaking the law carefully.

This is not about a lack of compassion but rather a lack of a broader vision.

Rather than breaking the law in support of someone who has come here without the legal right to be in this country, I think it wiser to support those people who are in dire circumstances in a legal fashion.

To advocate otherwise by encouraging lawbreaking when it comes to the basic laws of who is legally entitled to be in and remain in this country, is to violate the foundational rule of humanity: do not do to someone what is hateful to you.

There are countless millions who have been waiting patiently, filing paperwork/paying fees, for  their legitimate turn to be in this country. Cutting to the front of the line, illegally as you suggest, is that hateful action I speak of.
