A Colorado lawmaker accused Democrats this week of “intentionally running” legislation to “create abortion tourism,” going so far as to say visitors to Colorado can “go skiing for a week and then on the way home they can get their abortion.”

“In so many states, they’re saying, ‘No, we’re not doing abortions.’ We’re going to have no abortions after six weeks, 12 weeks, 23, 24 weeks, whatever those rules are to try to protect the sanctity of life and the beating hearts of those unborn children,” said state Rep. Richard Holtorf of Akron last week on a KFTM right-wing radio show.

“[Demorcats] have run bills — and passed bills now — that make Colorado the most progressive, and I say regressive, abortion state in the western United States.

“So now people are going to be able to drive to Colorado and get an abortion. In fact, they can drive up to the ski resort, go skiing for a week, and then on the way home they can get their abortion.”

Pro-choice advocates argue not only that abortions are being sought by out-of-state patients facing horrific circumstances, like rare medical diseases, but more broadly that the decision to have an abortion should be made by patients.

Organizations in Colorado are helping patients take advantage of Colorado’s pro-choice laws to come to Colorado to receive abortion care.
