Democrat Karl Hanlon will no longer fundraise for his campaign against incumbent state Sen. Bob Rankin and is asking supporters to “redirect their donations to organizations combating Colorado’s East Troublesome Fire in Grand County,” according to a Hanlon news release.

“I started this campaign to be an advocate for the working families of Senate District 8, and our communities are facing the life and death impacts of climate change in our district today,” stated Hanlon in the release. “It would be irresponsible not to do what we can to support our community when we have the chance.”

“We are suspending our fundraising efforts and asking that donations for the duration of our campaign be directed to organizations providing relief in our communities,” Hanlon said.

Hanlon’s campaign suggested donations be given to the Grand Foundation Wildfire Emergency Fund and the American Red Cross Western Wildfires Fund.

Hanlon said the move reflects the issues he’s emphasized on the campaign trail and the concerns of organizations, like Conservation Colorado and the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters, that have endorsed him.
